Picture Parent:
Picture Parent: An ideal way to...
• Interact with the kids in your child’s class
• Get to know your child’s teacher
• Volunteer with a minimum commitment
Who/what are “picture parents”? Picture parents are once-a-month volunteers who present a classic painting to a Windsor classroom, leading the kids in a discussion about it. The name says “parents,” but it can be anyone—moms, dads, aunts and uncles or grandparents. We are looking for at least one volunteer for each class.
How much time does it take? Picture Parent presentations happen one day a month and usually take 15–20 minutes, first thing in the morning after announcements. We prefer to do it school-wide on the second Tuesday of the month, but you are free to make other arrangements with your classroom teacher if necessary.
How much do I need to know about art? Virtually nothing. We give you information on the paintings along with everything else you need to know ahead of time—from facts about the artist to suggested questions for discussion.
Do I need to be good at giving presentations? No. You just need to be good at talking to children—a skill most parents have hopefully practiced and developed. If you can ask questions and point to a painting, you can do this.
Does “Picture Parents” have anything to do with yearbook photos? No. Not in the least. But sometimes people have been confused by this :)
